This episode could save your dog's life. It could save a child. It could prevent someone from getting a serious injury from a dog. A dog has many ways to communicate how he is feeling and what his intention is. The challenge is that we sometimes misread or misunderstand what a dog is telling us.
In the episode you'll hear:
- How to identify what a dog is about to do.
- What your dog's T.E.M.P. is telling you.
- Vocalizing and why it's important.
- Children and dogs, the proper etiquette.
Thank you thank you thank you! This is so important for dog owners and anyone like me who just wants to pet and cuddle every dog they see! Will definitely be sharing this.
I have a very timid and nervous cavalier. But with those big brown puppy dog eyes and soft floppy ears many people want to pet her. I LOVE it when people, especially kids ASK me if they can pet my dog. And I thank them for doing so.
Where have you been all my years of dog is ownership? Just signed up for homeschooling my dog and can’t wait to get started with my almost 6 yr old cavalier and almost 1 year old Boston terrier!
Great information!!
Very informative. 🙏
Greater dog language awareness to be had in this episode and really helpful for anyone around dogs!
My 4mo. old blue heeler is friendly but sometimes he’ll wiggle butt over to someone, get pet, roll onto his back and while doing that have a nervous pee.
Is regular walking around different people in different environments the best help? We went through Home Depot today….
Great advice! In reviewing the T.E.E.M.P with my 2.5 years old mini Aussie, I have a question. Perhaps I’ve been reading this incorrectly. I’m working on his confidence. With my Aussie, his ears are either straight up or pinned to the back of his head. I have thought that straight up means that he is listening to me, where the pinned to the back of his head means he is focus and ready to go. With his very short tail, either his ‘butt wiggles’ or is still. Please clarify this characteristics with an Aussis! Thanks so much. Always love your training!
Very helpful. I let my dog down at the vets last week. He was clearly afraid of everyone with masks on and I didn’t stop and think. I got caught in “should”. I haven’t been able to do the normal socialization because of Covid and put him in a situation where he was clearly asking for help and I let him down. Luckily I eventually realized what I was doing and got him out of there with no one getting bitten. I felt horrible, I wasn’t mad at him but really upset with myself. I know mistakes are just information and I have good support for rebuilding the relationship, but it hurt my heart that I wasn’t really “present” for him and slipped into should. Thanks again for this and all you do.
Great podcast Susan. It is interesting to hear about all the signs our dogs give us. It is also interesting to me that dog chewing and licking is a sign of nervousness, but horses chewing & licking their lips is a sign of relaxation.
This episode helped me a lot today! We had a huge great pyrenese walking up to us on our daily walk, no leash, no owner, nothing! I looked at the dog to figure out how he feels about meeting us and looked at my big Newfie to see how he was feeling. Even though I was stressed I could see that the dog on the lose was indeed friendly.
Unfortunately my Chewie (my dog) was intimidated by him (he thinks he is cat sized, so this was a big dog to him lol). But I allowed them to meet and when Chewie took the leash in his mouth I let him lead me away from that dog until he was comfortable again. The other dog followed us for a bit and came up again to sniff with Chewie and they were better. Chewie still decided he was too much so we turned around and walked away.
I love your podcast Susan and listen to it while driving. Then I go back home and listen to it again to write down what I learned. In these few weeks I learned so much new stuff! Thank you for doing this podcast and your amazing online training! I will make sure to join one of your classes soon.
How do you react when your dog growls at another dog?
Such an important topic for EVERY dog owner.
Agreed rating: of 5 *****
Great Podcast Susan!!! I am currently in your Dogs are Awesome masterclass and I have THRILLED to be learning so much from you! This podcast will be listened to a few times by me and will definitely be sharing it with my friends and family! You truly are the expert to follow and learn from! THANK YOU!
Such a great podcast Susan. I wish every dog owner could have the opportunity to hear this valuable information. It should be made compulsory learning for all. Thank you.
This is probably one of my favorite podcasts so far. My Stelly-bells is a 7month old Border Collie/Cattle Dog cross. She lacks confidence. When we walk, she is very nervous of people approaching her head on, as well as other dogs. Her tail tucks under her hind end, she yips, and she voices a nervous growl. I’ve had people say she is aggressive (not even a little), I’ve had people say she is protecting me (she is more chicken than my chickens), and I’ve had others say she is disobedient (she is the most obedient dog I’ve ever had!) She simply lacks confidence, and thanks to Susan, we are both improving daily! Thanks for educating people on dog-anguage. (Get it?? Like the bear-naked??)
5***** rating from me – thank you Susan 🙂
Elena,
I found the “Episode Transcript” button for Episode 1, but there aren’t any for the other 5 episodes.
Hi Joyce, the button shows for us at the end of each episode, can you check again? If you can’t see it, please touch base at wag@dogsthat.com and we will be happy to help.
Please help! I can’t seem to find the link to print the podcasts.
Joyce
Hi Joyce! You can click on the “Episode Transcript” button at the end of the post, right under Resources. Hope this helps!
