How good are you at manipulation? Stick with me, because after this episode, you’re going to embrace it. When we hear the word “manipulation” we immediately think of deception, but in dog training, it’s a skill that is going to create a relationship of confidence and trust with your dog and set your dog up to have an amazing life with you.
In the episode you'll hear:
- Where confidence fits into dog training.
- How to best manipulate your dog's environment.
- Where the bunny farm fits into distraction training.
- Setting dogs and trainers up for success.
- All about training in the bathroom.
Hi Susan,
I have been practicing int’s your choice and my dog is great at it but if I am not around, she will definitely take advantage and jump the garbage bin or steal food left behind. How do you get your dogs to have the control when you are not around?
Thank you!
Charlotte
Hi Susan, and a massive thank you. We have lived with our rescue scent hound for 20 months now and despite trying several trainers, including one who is games based but uses luring, we are still struggling with separation anxiety, reactivity and lead pulling (to name just some of our issues). Your shaping based method and your whole ethos really resonate with me and I am starting to see some early results, having just started with ‘search’ and ‘itsyerchoice’. I am so excited to have finally found someone who makes a positive impact and I can’t wait for the rest of our shaping journey. Thank you so much.
Hi, I attended a star puppy. The instructor suggested that all students find you on YouTube and watch your podcast. So I did and very happy that I did. I’ve lived with horses for a lot of my life as well as dogs. Creating a means of communication is so very important. That is what I see in what you’re teaching. Making humans play a responsible role in a communicative way with their dogs. Not sure that that came out the way that I wanted it to, but I believe you will know what I mean. Thank you so much for doing these podcast. I enjoy learning and the way that you present your information is the best I have seen or heard yet. Thank you again.
Thank you, Laurie, and welcome! We’re grateful to have you in our community!
II am struggling so much with my puppy’s resistance to being in a crate or away from me. I don’t understand how to manipulate and create confidence in my puppy. I am not a new-be to training dogs, but have never had one with separation anxiety. Help It is painful to leave her in that situation too long and hear the howling.

How wonderful you are. Thank you. I love your style of teaching us to teach our beast friends. ❤️
I have a question; you tell us to train in crapper-training to reduce the amount of triggers and distractions. Would you say that it’s better not to go to puppyclasses and to train alone with your dog till he knows the exercices well enough and then only go to puppyclasses to extend to amount of triggers and distractions?
So true Elizabeth!
So often people give manipulation and boundaries a negative contonation. I wish that people could just stop for a moment and understand that kindness requires both of these traits. Manipulation is defined as skillful or artful management. Boundaries indicate bounds or limits; we wouldn’t expect a child to understand this concept without guidance. So why should we leave our dogs to self-guide?
5***** from me. A great reminder about the importance of environment. Thank you

FIVE STARS, SUSAN!! I binged listened to all six podcasts today.
I am coming to the end of my first year of Recallers and was wavering on whether to sign up for another year. Your series of podcasts has cemented my decision to renew and keep working on a life of freedoms for my dog. I will be sharing this podcast series with my friends.
Thank you for being such an inspiration.
