I’m sharing my implementation guide so that you can teach your dog to stay and hold duration positions easily with reinforcement. Your dog understanding how to wait with duration will help in daily life around home, when you are out together, and in dog sports like obedience and agility. All you need is your dog, a tug or some treats, and you are ready to get started.
In the episode you'll hear:
- Why I don’t use the phrase impulse control these days.

A trainer introduced me to crate games years ago and I’ve been a Susan Garrett fan ever since.
I have a 10 month old puppy who is rehabbing from a recent surgery and needs to stay quiet with limited activity. Any suggestions for some mental games I can play with him to keep him stimulated and learning but relatively calm? Thanks
Love all Susan does, but this was exceptional. Easy is best for me and we all think it’s more difficult that it really is. Life is easy as long as you are clear what you want. Consistency is another friend, I can’t wait to see what comes next!
oops…. as I was ‘posting comment, say my email was wrong…. Correct one below..
This morning my 1 year old was in his HZ “place” in our kitchen while I was making breakfast. My husband came in and started playing with him/ calling. Dog got up and walked away. I started to follow so i could bring him back. Before I got there, the dog came back with a toy and laid down again where he was. Since he came right back and was where I wanted him, I didn’t do anything. Am unsure what I should have done because although this morning was ok, I don’t want him to think he can do it all the time with out being released… What should I have done? What should I do in the future if it happens again?
Your dog showed obvious understanding of his Hot Zone place, but he apparently saw your husband’s calling him as a release. I would mark and reward your dog for returning to his place, and be proud of him!
Just brought home 2 puppies and have started watching your podcasts to be a better dog owner
